For most of the American public, Carter is close to the bottom of the totem-pole of presidential icons. But in his defense, he was not corrupt like so many of his predecessors, he tried hard to be open and honest with America and the world, he was careful in applying his deeply held faith to various contemporary politics and problems. He might have been too naively religious and there might have been time when he sacrificed political responsibility for personal piety which would assert it is more important to be true to oneself than to do justice in the community which would get your hands dirty. But his life after the presidency has been exemplary and he serves as a model for millions.
